US President, Donald Trump is facing backlash following derogatory comments attributed to him, against late South African President, Nelson Mandela.

A recent book written by Mr Trump’s former lawyer and “fixer” Michael Cohen, reveals that the president called anti-Apartheid icon, Nelson Mandela “no leader.” Cohen alleges in his book, Disloyal: A Memoir, that Mr Trump denigrated Nelson Mandela, quoting him as saying: “Mandela f—ed the whole country up. Now it’s a s—hole. F— Mandela. He was no leader.”

South Africans fight back

South Africans have not taken this revelation lightly. They have criticized the US leader, for purportedly using such words against the country’s first black president.

Mandela meant a lot to the South African people. The Nobel Peace Prize winner fought for the liberation of South Africa from white domination.

The African National Congress (ANC) which Mandela once led, had a stern response to Donald Trump in a statement. The party said “all freedom-loving people of the world are appalled by these insults which come from a person who, himself, is not a model of competent leadership”.

“Trump is [the most] divisive, misogynistic and disrespectful person ever to occupy the office of the president,” it added.

The ANC described Mandela as someone who “reached out to the world and sought to bring peace and a just society”.

Meanwhile, the Nelson Mandela Foundation was not any indifferent to this. The foundation censured President Trump’s supposed remarks, in a statement on its website.

“We do not believe that leaders who conduct themselves in the way Mr. Trump does are in a position to offer authoritative commentary on the life and work” of Mandela, the statement read in part.

Trump’s alleged racist remarks

The tell-all book paints Donald Trump as a racist. Mr Trump racially attacked black people, including his predecessor, Barrack Obama, the book claims.

“Tell me one country run by a black person that isn’t a s—hole. They are all complete f—ing toilets,” President Trump is quoted as saying.

Actually, this is not the first time Trump is being accused of racism. In 2018, he allegedly referred to African countries as “s—hole nations”.

White House dismisses Cohen’s claims

The White House says Michael Cohen, who used to be the President’s personal attorney until they both fell out, is lying.

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said on Saturday: “Michael Cohen is a disgraced felon and disbarred lawyer, who lied to Congress. He has lost all credibility, and it’s unsurprising to see his latest attempt to profit off of lies.”

The new book has damning revelations against President Trump, and it is unclear if it will have any effect on the outcome of the November elections.

However, it remains to be seen whether this will destabilize President Trump’s support base or not, as he seeks reelection.
